Visitor levy calculator
Work out the visitor levy on a booking in a Scottish council area or in Cardiff. It applies each council’s rate, night cap, start date and advance booking cut-off for you. Nothing you type leaves your device.
The schemes the calculator uses
| Council | Levy | Stays from | Bookings made from |
|---|---|---|---|
| City of Edinburgh | 5%, first 5 nights | 24 July 2026 | 1 October 2025 |
| Glasgow City | 5%, whole stay | 25 January 2027 | April 2026 |
| Aberdeen City | 7%, whole stay | 1 April 2027 | 1 October 2026 |
| Stirling | 3%, refund for nights after the first 7 | 14 June 2027 | 1 January 2027 |
| West Dunbartonshire | 5%, whole stay | 1 July 2027 | 1 October 2026 |
| Cardiff | £1.30 per person per night (75p for pitches and dorm beds) | 1 April 2027 | 28 September 2026 |
- In Scotland the levy is a percentage of the accommodation price without VAT. In Wales it’s a fixed amount per person per night.
- For a stay that starts before the levy and ends after it, only the nights from the start date count.
- In Wales, at the 75p rate under-18s aren’t counted on the first night. Everyone in Wales who takes short-stay bookings must register with the Welsh Revenue Authority by 31 March 2027, whether or not their council charges the levy.
- Some guests are exempt under some schemes, for example people receiving certain disability benefits, and Stirling residents in Stirling.
