The 2026/27 rates the calculator uses
| Income tax (England, Wales, NI) | Rate |
|---|---|
| Up to £12,570 (personal allowance) | 0% |
| £12,571 to £50,270 | 20% |
| £50,271 to £125,140 | 40% |
| Over £125,140 | 45% |
In Scotland the rates are 19%, 20%, 21%, 42%, 45% and 48%, with bands at £16,537, £29,526, £43,662, £75,000 and £125,140. Your personal allowance goes down by £1 for every £2 of income over £100,000.
- Class 4 National Insurance: 6% on profits between £12,570 and £50,270, then 2% above that.
- Class 2 National Insurance: nothing to pay. If your profit is £7,105 or more it’s treated as paid; below that you can pay £3.65 a week voluntarily.
You pay through Self Assessment by 31 January after the tax year ends: 31 January 2028 for 2026/27. If your bill is £1,000 or more you’ll usually make payments on account too. From April 2027, sole traders with income over £30,000 also need Making Tax Digital: check when you start.
