Do I need to register for VAT?
You must register if your VAT taxable turnover for the last 12 months is over £90,000. It’s a rolling 12 months, not the tax year, so check it at the end of every month.
The rules in short
- Over £90,000 in the last 12 months: register within 30 days of the end of the month you went over. You’re registered from the first day of the second month after you went over.
- Expect to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days alone: register by the end of those 30 days. You’re registered from the date you realised.
- If you register late, HMRC can charge you the VAT you should have charged from your effective date, plus a penalty.
- If you go over only for a one-off reason and expect to be back under £88,000, you can ask HMRC for an exception.
Example: your 12-month total first goes over £90,000 at the end of January 2027. You must register by 2 March 2027, and you’re VAT registered from 1 March 2027.
